Welcome to the online home for my fantasy fiction! Here are vast forests, flower-strewn meadows, merry streams, and villages with thatched roofs and neat fields. Here, dragons roam, castles rise upon the crests of hills, swords are forged, and magic sparkles in the air.

I started telling myself stories at an early age – pre-school. I wrote my first (of many) unfinished stories in 7th grade, and my Muse not only found me, she carried me off.

As for the fantasy genre, I got hooked in 1966, on a ship to Hamburg. I exhausted the ship’s library, and in the process discovered The Incomplete Enchanter by L. Sprague de Camp and Fletcher Pratt. I read it so often that the ship’s librarian let me keep it! But what hooked me into high fantasy, my favorite sub-genre, was someone giving me a copy of The Hobbit to read. I’ve been writing fantasy ever since.

Why fantasy? Because it’s rich in imagery and color. Because it’s so far from mundane. Because you can do or be anything. Because there are castles and dragons, two of my passions.

My stories are usually quest fantasy, or some variation of that. One of my favorite authors of all time is J.R.R. Tolkien, although I don’t attempt to copy his style, nor think that anyone should. I simply love a story about normal people (or hobbits or any other beings) in a fantastical world.

A few random things about me:

  • I write Regency romances under the name Catherine Dove.
  • I participate in National Novel Writing Month every year, under the name Hikarikat.
  • I live in rural Texas with my best friend (and beta reader) and a lot of animals (3 dogs. 2 cats, 3 birds, and 2 horses).
  • I am blissfully retired and enjoying country life and writing.
  • I’m a voracious reader, across a wide variety of genres, but I am not fond of “literary” fiction.
  • I love movies and TV series.
  • I’ve written fanfiction, the best of which is still out there at fanfiction.net.
  • I love animals, all animals, except insects – I’m phobic about those. I won’t kill them, but I’ll run screaming from them.
  • I am an Army brat, and I’ve lived in five states and two foreign countries.
  • I have a degree in English from Frostburg State University in Maryland.
